As a designer you need to be happy in your work, and you need to love what you do. If
you don’t have these two things, generally speaking, great things don’t come out.
When I started working as Senior Creative at Stolen Goat, I had never designed a cycling
jersey in my entire life. I did not know what, if any limitations there were, or if some things
were just no-no’s.
When I was told by owner Tim that I could be as free as I wanted to be design wise, that
was it, I was on one. However, there is always that little voice in your head that says
‘remember, these have to sell’. So even though I was going into overdrive with my design
offerings, often there would be a considerable amount of time discussing what should
and shouldn’t be out there to be more commercial, and that is still a reality.
Luckily I’m not a Prima Donna(most of the time) but often I’d go back into what I’d done
and think that what a shame this design or that design never made the cut, and into the
archive they would go.
Recently, I was asked if I would like to put some of those designs out there as a compact
signature range so of course I said yes. What has been produced is a small selection of
design work that just felt right at the right time to be released, it is a real mish mash of
styles, with no real thread holding it together other than they look like they belong with
each other.
